Medewi Beach

Surfer paradise

This is a small, secluded village in one of Bali's less-visited locations. It is primarily a surfing destination, and most visitors come solely for that reason. It is a terrific area to unwind for non-surfers and offers a picture of what Bali was like before the rise of major tourism in the 1970s.

Medewi is around 75 kilometers west of Denpasar on the main south coast road, and approximately 34 kilometers west of Tabanan. Anyone traveling by road from the south of Bali to the west coast port town of Gilimanuk will pass through this town.

Make your way around
This is an excellent location for walking. If you want to rent a motorcycle, your hotel should be able to accommodate you, and you may expect to pay between Rp 70,000 and Rp 100,000 each day. The beach is split into two sections: the rocky eastern half, which has several large flat grey stone boulders scattered with pebbles and black sand, and the sandier western half. It's not the ideal beach for sunbathing or resting, but it's perfect for long, peaceful walks. Local fishermen bring in their catch immediately east of the river mouth, which is accessible from the main road down a steep incline. You may get incredibly cheap and fresh seafood of all kinds here, or simply go to look around. Cows grazing, fishermen's wives mending nets, shopping, children playing, and boats being pulled out of the water The catch doesn't seem to arrive until approximately 10 a.m.
The sunset over the Indian Ocean is just breathtaking.
Go surfing at Medewi Beach, where the long left hand wave rolls all year and is popular with surfers. The heaviest waves usually occur in July and August. Around the northern point, there is also a right-hand break that is less than 100 meters distant. When the surf is mild, there is another a beach break about 250 meters south of the river mouth that works mid-tide. There are a few additional surf spots nearby, such as Balian Beach (30 minute drive east). It's worth checking Medewi Surf Information for the most up-to-date information on conditions. Recognize the origins of the name Medewi. This area was densely forested, with several Ketket (thorny) trees. The name Meduwi was derived from the Balinese word Alas Meduwi, which means thorny woodland.
