Sanctuary of friendly Grey Macaques in Ubud

Over 700 grey long-tailed macaques live in the Ubud Monkey Forest. This natural sanctuary, also known as Padangtegal's Sacred Monkey Grove, features paved roads through a green nutmeg forest as well as numerous old temples hidden behind dense foliage. Because of its community-based management, location, and accessibility of access, it is a popular wildlife reserve in Bali.

Avoid wearing any loose jewelry or clothing, since the monkeys can easily snare a necklace or bag in their search for something tasty to eat. Women on their periods should avoid entering the temple grounds, as they should at any other sacred place in Bali. Most guesthouses and resorts along Jalan Hanoman and the namesake Jalan Monkey Forest are within a 10-minute walk of the Ubud Monkey Forest.
